Decision-making is all in the brain! OU press release (pdf format)

Be your own life coach. Readers Digest. April 2002.

Extract from Sunday Times article (7.1.02)
flowerknotThe percentage of British companies offering to help people deal with stress has trebled in the past nine years...according to the 2000 Survey of Employees Benefits published by Hay Management Consultants.

Life coaching is the fastest growing form of assistance to be offered. A trained practitioner literally "coaches" clients to help them achieve their personal or professional goals. It uses techniques borrowed from various schools of thought, including management and personal development.

"Life coaching is results-focused and action-orientated. Searching questions help to draw out clients' innate knowledge. Qualified life coaches have learnt techniques to improve clients' self-esteem, language and physiology. By focusing on what works for the individual, they facilitate the changes their clients need to make - and the net effect is to empower the person to eliminate or reduce their stress".

"Clients normally undertake a four-week rolling contract that typically lasts between three and six months...sessions generally last 30 - 60 minutes at a cost of £80-£180 per hour. The coaching can be face-to-face or it can be by telephone or e-mail. A lot of coaching takes place during the evenings and some at weekends.

"Taking life coaching is a sign of strength that is particularly popular with people who are self-determined and strong. My clients range from lawyers and business managers to chief executives and successful entrepreneurs."

Evidence of the value of life coaching is mounting. According to a study by the International Personnel Management Association, ordinary training typically increased productivity by 22% while training combined with life coaching increased productivity by 88%.

"In addition to more than 5,000 books dealing with the topic, people can attend stress workshops or undertake stress counselling. They all offer some form of prescription for handling stress, but...I have never encountered anything as valuable as life coaching."
