Brilliantissimo! can help
What's the difference between coaching and other disciplines such as
counselling, therapy and training?
Life coaching .
Life coaching focuses on taking stock, setting goals, believing in yourself and
taking action. It is personalised and success-oriented. A coach challenges,
provides support and offers alternatives.
Life coaching is 'future-enabling' - equipping you with skills and
techniques to cope with whatever life brings in the future- in life, in work or
relationships.
Coaching is designed to help the averagely healthy individual enhance their
quality of life.
A mentor is someone on whom you can model your
professional activities and behaviour and who has exptertise in your
professional field. A coach may also be a mentor if you would like to train as
a coach, take coaching into the workplace or use coaching as a parenting skill.
Counselling offers support to those in distress
through listening skills. Like coaching, it offers up a mirror to help people
become self-aware and change their behaviour.
Therapy deals with dysfunction and looks back
into the past in order to understand current behaviour. Like coaching, it
encourages the unconscious to become conscious.
Training programmes focus on imparting
information through 'off the peg' workshops held in the workplace. Coaching
deals with process, is tailor-made and delivered on a one-to-one basis by
phone, email or in person.
Sports coaching concentrates on building
strength and stamina. Like coaching, it also concentrates on the importance of
belief and attitude.
